Greece is dispatching two frigates and a pair of F-16 fighter jets to Cyprus. The move was announced by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias after a meeting of Greece's Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence.
The decision comes after an alert at the British base in Akrotiri and what Greek officials described as "unpredictable attacks on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus". According to the minister, Greece will send the Belharra-class frigate "Kimon" and a second frigate equipped with the "Centaur" anti-drone system. A pair of F-16 fighter jets will also be deployed. Dendias and the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff are expected to travel to Nicosia.
"Following the unpredictable attacks on the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, I assured that Greece will contribute in every possible way to the Republic of Cyprus in order to address the threats and illegal actions," Dendias said, noting that Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also held a telephone conversation with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
