Mitsotakis backs Trump on Iran as US president calls Greece ‘terrific’ ally

Exchange of praise comes as Athens urges a diplomatic deal to curb economic fallout from Middle East tensions and stabilise energy markets

Greece's prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, said he hopes the United States and Iran will reach an agreement to end hostilities in the Middle East, arguing that a deal would help restore regional stability and ease pressure on global energy markets.

Speaking in an interview with Breitbart News on the sidelines of the Delphi Economic Forum, Mitsotakis pointed to the economic consequences of the recent conflict, including disruption linked to the Strait of Hormuz. He expressed support for efforts by the US President Donald Trump to secure a diplomatic resolution, while reiterating the position that Iran should not obtain nuclear weapons. Mitsotakis said that, although military developments have shaped the situation so far, attention should now shift towards mitigating economic fallout and pursuing diplomacy.

"Let's hope that we will also have some sort of agreement regarding the situation in the Middle East because, of course, we're all quite concerned about the economic fallout," Mitsotakis told Breitbart News. "Of course, we, from the very beginning, said that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and as a country in the region, we're always very concerned with the destabilising effect that Iran has had, but I think we've reached a point where we need to be quite concerned about the economic fallout of this situation."

A temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran, initially agreed for two weeks, has been extended indefinitely by Washington. However, negotiations have so far not resulted in an agreement. Despite the lack of a formal deal, Mitsotakis suggested there is cautious optimism that existing negotiations could form the basis of a broader agreement. He framed the outcome as important not only for regional security but also for global economic stability, particularly energy markets affected by the recent tensions.

In turn, at the White House, in response to questions, Trump praised Greece, calling it a "terrific" ally and describing Mitsotakis as a "terrific guy" who understands the importance of key global issues. "Greece has been very supportive. Greece has been terrific. Greece is fantastic, it has helped us a lot," said Donald Trump. "Mitsotakis is a terrific guy." Trump's comments mark the second time he has publicly praised Mitsotakis, following similar comments in a previous interview last year.
