Steve Bannon, a former adviser on governance and national strategy to Donald Trump, discussed Greece and its current and potential future role in global shipping during the Delphi Economic Forum.
Speaking via an online link and responding to questions from journalist Matthew Boyle, Bannon outlined a geopolitical assessment, speaking of "a new NATO". He said the United States could bring in partners from Asia and the Pacific, citing Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan, which, as he put it, could jointly address challenges from Beijing and the Chinese Communist Party.
Regarding global security, Bannon said that, regardless of developments in the war in Iran, several regions would still require protection. He cited, in particular, the protection of the Suez Canal, adding that this should be largely undertaken by European states.
Bannon also described Greece as a "superpower" in shipping, freedom of navigation, and supply chains. He argued that these sectors would be central to future conflicts, mentioning regions such as the Red Sea, Antarctica, Panama, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
Bannon predicted that oceans and maritime transport would be key areas of conflict in the coming decades. He pointed out that we often overlook how goods are transported and emphasised that Greece is well-positioned relative to the oceans.
During the discussion, Bannon also repeated his claim that the 2020 US presidential election, in which Joe Biden won the White House, was "stolen".
