Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday on the sidelines of the AI Impact Summit to discuss what both sides described as an "excellent" level of cooperation between Greece and India. The talks marked two years since Mitsotakis' official visit to India and two and a half years since Modi's trip to Athens, which elevated bilateral ties to a strategic partnership.
According to the Greek government, the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of relations. They agreed to build on the existing momentum, with particular emphasis on defence, shipping, shipbuilding and repair, and infrastructure. Mitsotakis reiterated that Greece can serve as India's gateway to Europe, citing its geographical position and port and logistics infrastructure.
The prime minister also stressed Greece's willingness to participate in the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, known as IMEC, positioning the country as a key node in emerging trade routes linking Asia and Europe. The leaders discussed the prospective EU-India trade agreement, which Mitsotakis described as a "unique opportunity" to strengthen economic and geopolitical ties amid international uncertainty.
He highlighted opportunities in the Indian market for high-quality Greek agri-food products, including olive oil and kiwifruit. Developments in Ukraine and the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence were also on the agenda, with Mitsotakis stressing that both Greece and India have much to contribute to the global AI debate.
