The culture of Flag Football was introduced to Northern Greece on Thursday morning through a landmark visit by the Los Angeles Chargers, marking the NFL team’s first-ever appearance in the region. The initiative took place at Anatolia College's facilities and was hosted by Pinewood American International School, signalling a new chapter in the sport’s presence and development in Greece.
Around 300 pupils from Pinewood took part in the camp, receiving hands-on training and practical guidance from Chargers players and staff. The school’s international profile was reflected in the event, with roughly 95% of its student body coming from outside Greece, including a significant number from the United States. The programme concluded with a demonstration match, offering participants a first substantial introduction to the sport, albeit within a closed educational setting.

Flag Football, a non-contact and more accessible version of American football, is experiencing rapid global growth and has already been included in the official programme of the 2028 Summer Olympics. The presence of an NFL organisation in Thessaloniki, even in an educational capacity, highlighted the growing role of Pinewood and Anatolia College as hubs for international sporting and cultural exchange in Northern Greece.
Speaking at the event, Panos Vlachos, President of both institutions, highlighted their long-standing ties with the United States and their history of introducing American sports such as lacrosse and softball. “This team has an American of Greek descent as its director, and we are happy that he is here today,” Vlachos noted.

Chargers player Daiyan Henley also emphasised the importance of engaging with young people in Greece. He said, “It means a lot to us to have the opportunity to meet these kids, as there is a very strong connection to our organisation that belongs to the Spanos family.”
The Chargers are recognised across the National Football League for investing in grassroots and international development, with Flag Football at the centre of their global outreach strategy.
