Pfizer Hellas workers in Thessaloniki protest job cuts, working conditions

Protest group cites union complaints of job losses, unpaid overtime and a "climate of fear" at the company

A protest took place outside Pfizer Hellas' offices in Thessaloniki, where participants displayed banners and handed out leaflets expressing concerns about employment conditions.

The intervention followed a complaint by the company's employees' union, which referred to "the closure of hundreds of jobs, increased workload, unpaid overtime and work exhaustion, as well as a climate of fear aimed at discouraging trade union activity".

The group also stated that Pfizer aims to achieve approximately $7.7 billion in cost reductions by the end of 2027, claiming that "employees will pay this cost." In the leaflet circulated during the protest, participants asserted that "many departments of Pfizer have been undergoing continuous organisational changes" affecting hundreds of workers.

The employees argued these changes include department closures, increased workloads for remaining staff, and dismissals or pressure to resign. The leaflet further claimed that such resignations are accompanied by incentives to ensure employees' silence.

The text also noted increasing reports of heavy workloads, unpaid overtime, especially during remote work, and work on holidays, and added that more employees are experiencing burnout. The document links these developments to what it describes as a broader strategy focused on profitability and cost reduction, stating that workers are being asked to bear the costs of economic competition and crises.

The group called for collective organisation and participation in trade unions. Its demands include no dismissals, reinstatement of dismissed workers, protection from detrimental job changes, retraining in the event of department closures, a collective labour agreement with wage increases, and an end to what it described as intimidation and obstruction of union activity.
