Thessaloniki hosts global maths gathering with international reach

Week-long programme spans three cities and culminates in major international events, including the Balkan Mathematical Olympiad in May

The 16th International Mathematics Week will take place from 22 to 28 April 2026 across northern Greece, with international participation from different educational levels. The main programme will be hosted in Thessaloniki from 22 to 26 April at the HELEXPO conference centre (Pavilion 8), before continuing in Trikala on 27 April and Kastoria on 28 April.

According to the organisers, the event aims to promote mathematical thinking and highlight its relevance in everyday life. This year's central theme, "Mathematics in research, technology, art and culture", reflects a broad, interdisciplinary field where mathematics functions not only as a tool for calculation and analysis, but also as a means of understanding, creativity and innovation.

The theme is structured around four main dimensions: research, technology, art and culture. As in previous editions, student work from schools will also be presented as part of the programme.

The event is organised by the Hellenic Mathematical Society, alongside academic institutions including the University of Western Macedonia (Department of Mathematics), the International Hellenic University, and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Alongside the Mathematics Week, Thessaloniki will also host the 7th International Conference of Mathematics from 24 to 26 April 2026. The city is further set to welcome the 43rd Balkan Mathematical Olympiad from 3 to 8 May 2026.
