The municipality of Thessaloniki has formally launched an international tender for the long-awaited redevelopment of the Aristotelous Square, one of northern Greece's most recognisable urban landmarks. The tender was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 25 February.
The intervention covers the full length of the Aristotelous axis, from Nikis Avenue on the seafront to Egnatia Street. It aims to "introduce contemporary design solutions while preserving the location's monumental character." The municipality says the plan combines aesthetic and functional upgrades with environmental improvements, bioclimatic enhancements, long-term durability and full accessibility.
The announcement follows the start of works to regenerate Agia Sofia and the imminent launch of the Eleftherias Square intervention, which will create a Holocaust Memorial Park. "We are moving to the next step, the regeneration of the city's emblematic square, with respect for its historic identity and with our gaze fixed on Thessaloniki's optimistic future," a statement said.
Officials also emphasised the speed at which funding was secured: "Within just 26 months, we secured the necessary financing with the support of the Region of Central Macedonia and are laying the foundations for the third consecutive regeneration in the 'heart' of the city, a substantial upgrade in citizens' quality of life."
Beyond Aristotelous Square, the municipality pledged to press ahead with other flagship projects, including a wooden deck on Nea Paralia, the redesign of Demokratias Square and the restoration of Dioikitiriou Square. "The city we dream of is becoming reality," it said.
